Mission Innovation’s Clean Energy Materials Innovation Challenge is holding an experts’ workshop 11–14 September 2017 in Mexico City. The invitation-only workshop of more than 60 preeminent scientists from around the world represents a critical early step in achieving the Innovation Challenge’s ultimate goal of accelerating the exploration, discovery, and use of new, high-performance, low-cost clean energy materials by an order of magnitude. The workshop is sponsored by the Mexican Ministry of Energy (SENER) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), in partnership with the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR).

Traditional cycles of discovery require several years to move a newly discovered molecule through simulation, synthesis and testing, and synthetic procedures. This workshop will identify and explore opportunities for vastly accelerating this process by applying high-throughput synthesis, calculation, and characterization to materials discovery. Experts will identify critical research and development gaps and priorities and explore opportunities for deeper cross-country and multi-partner collaboration.

The results from the workshop will be published in a detailed report that will be distributed to the 23 Mission Innovation members and research institutions worldwide. The report will serve as an important resource for Mission Innovation countries’ decisions regarding research investments, tenders, and priorities in energy materials innovation.
