Today, the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission announced revised, more ambitious 2030 Mission goals, at an event during Singapore Maritime Week. International shipping is responsible for 3 percent of global GHG emissions, and reducing emissions from this sector is therefore key to meet global climate targets.
The new goals will require coordinated efforts to foster innovation across the entire maritime value chain, from the ships, to the zero-emission fuels they will rely on, to the infrastructure that will supply them.
Co-lead members of the Executive Committee of the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission shared their thoughts on the implications of the Mission’s revised goals:
Norway

The Zero-Emission Shipping Mission has analysed and revised the mission 2030 goals in light of the revised IMO strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships and latest studies from Climate Action in Shipping Report by UMAS, Race to Zero and the Getting to Zero Coalition.
Background
The Zero Emission Shipping Mission was established in 2021 to mobilize global action behind ambitious and inspirational innovation goals and provide political momentum that can lead to tipping points in the cost and scale of net zero energy solutions across all sectors.
The Zero-Emission Shipping Mission is one of the seven Mission Innovation “Missions” bringing together high-ambitious alliances between countries, the private sector, research institutes, and civil society. The Mission will demonstrate commercially viable zero-emission ships by 2030 by focusing on the entire value chain: the ship, the fuel production, and the fuel infrastructure, driving the sector to a tipping point in its transition to well-to-wake zero-emission fuels as soon as possible.
