New Mission Innovation 2030 Goals

Today, the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission announced revised, more ambitious 2030 Mission goals, at an event during Singapore Maritime Week. International shipping is responsible for 3 percent of global GHG emissions, and reducing emissions from this sector is therefore key to meet global climate targets.

The new goals will require coordinated efforts to foster innovation across the entire maritime value chain, from the ships, to the zero-emission fuels they will rely on, to the infrastructure that will supply them.

Co-lead members of the Executive Committee of the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission shared their thoughts on the implications of the Mission’s revised goals:

Norway
The 2023 IMO GHG Strategy marked a historical milestone in the international efforts to decarbonise shipping. Zero-Emission Shipping Mission’s strengthened ambitions show continued commitment from the mission members to be in the forefront of the transition, providing the needed uptake of well-to-wake zero emission fuels and technology solutions to contribute to the achievement of our international decarbonisation goals.”
-Sveinung Oftedal, Chief Negotiator – Green Shipping, Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment, and Chair of the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission Executive Committee

Denmark
The members of the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission have decided to show the way and today we announce revised 2030 goals for international shipping. With these ambitious goals, our international partnership is taking an important step in further supporting first movers and the decarbonization of international shipping by 2030.”
-Rikke Wetter Olufsen, Deputy Director General, Danish Maritime Authority

United States
“As we move to fully decarbonize the global maritime sector by 2050, we need to ensure we are receptive to new information in this ever-changing landscape. With this in mind, I am very excited that the Zero Emission Shipping Mission has reevaluated and adjusted our 2030 milestones to further align them with mission member assessments and the revised IMO goals.”
-Michael Berube, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Sustainable Transportation and fuels at the U.S. Department of Energy

Global Maritime Forum
We are pleased that Zero Emission Shipping Mission is embracing the challenge of the IMO’s revised Greenhouse Gas Strategy. The goal of achieving 5% uptake of zero-emission fuels by 2030, was something the Getting to Zero Coalition helped to formulate in 2021, and we helped found the Zero Emission Shipping Mission because we believe that public-private collaboration on innovation will be key to achieving this goal. The Mission’s updated goals make it even clearer how much work needs to be done, and how important the leadership of the Mission members will be.”
-Johannah Christensen, CEO Global Maritime Forum

Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping
To achieve a climate neutral shipping sector by 2050, it is critical that significant progress is made already in this decade. We are seeing positive developments in the industry as well as in the regulatory space, with the revised IMO strategy, but much remains unsolved. It is the role of the Zero Emission Shipping Mission to mobilize the action and provide political momentum needed to reach our goals.”
-Pernille Dahlgaard, Chief Officer, Government, Business & Analytics, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping.

The Zero-Emission Shipping Mission has analysed and revised the mission 2030 goals in light of the revised IMO strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships and latest studies from Climate Action in Shipping Report by UMAS, Race to Zero and the Getting to Zero Coalition.

Background

The Zero Emission Shipping Mission was established in 2021 to mobilize global action behind ambitious and inspirational innovation goals and provide political momentum that can lead to tipping points in the cost and scale of net zero energy solutions across all sectors.

The Zero-Emission Shipping Mission is one of the seven Mission Innovation “Missions” bringing together high-ambitious alliances between countries, the private sector, research institutes, and civil society. The Mission will demonstrate commercially viable zero-emission ships by 2030 by focusing on the entire value chain: the ship, the fuel production, and the fuel infrastructure, driving the sector to a tipping point in its transition to well-to-wake zero-emission fuels as soon as possible.
